This paper reviews the key function of the catholic press at the end of XIX century, with the creation of a kind of catechism which every catholic person identified the enemy of his or her way of life. The ideas that the church attacked included Liberalism, Freemasonry, and Protestantism as a threatening triad that had to be combatted.  In order to reach this goal, the ecclesiastical hierarchy created images about each of these ideas that portrayed them as sects.
